Day One – the first full day at the centre for the students.
Day 1 is when students and group leaders are given all the information they need for their stay. The students get level tested for their classes and receive a school induction, whilst the group leaders review the timetable and school rules.
After breakfast, students will be split into two groups according to The Zig Zag (See section 1.8 The Zig Zag).
One group will be taken by the academic team for level placement tests for which you will need to liaise with the academic team in advance to see if you need to allocate a large room like a lecture theatre, which may need booking with the facilities team.
The other group will be given a Summer Centre Induction by the Coordinators. This induction includes fire safety, rules and expectations, and a basic overview of what they will experience over the summer. It is important to deliver the induction with a welcoming, positive, and energetic approach as it will set up the atmosphere for their entire summer. The induction PowerPoint can be found on the Staff Drive. You will need to make sure you have access to a projector and screen, and a laptop to run the presentation for the students.
After lunch, students will swap activities, and you will repeat the same process.
The Centre Manager will need to meet with the group leaders individually, to discuss their specific timetables, answer any questions, and make any amendments to the programme as required. These meetings should be arranged on Day 1, and all timings should be kept. This is an important step for displaying the professionalism and organisation of the company to our clients, and ensures that you are regarded as a competent, responsible, reliable manager for their stay.
Key things to cover are:
Timetable review and confirmation
Group Leader declaration forms to be signed (available on the Staff Drive)
Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy, Statement of Responsibility
After dinner service, students will take part in the first activity, the Welcome Party.
Campus Coordinators must lead this activity by running ice breaker games or activities for the students, then supervise the rest of the evening. Typically there is a mix of games and social time with music.
The next day is the first full day of programming for the centre, so the Centre Manager must liaise with their entire team, and all other departments including academics to ensure everyone has everything they need for the day to run smoothly.
